Updated: May 25, 2021

Below you can see an infographic which I created using an online platform called Genially. The question which I answered in this infographic is: How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

Below you can read the basic text version of this answer:

I personally believe that while Sylk Magazine May 2021, The Inner Style Issue, does follow quite a few conventions, it still stands out and defies stereotypes.

Looking at the cover of my issue, the audience (women of all ages) could easily understand that they are looking at a fashion and lifestyle magazine, while still being intrigued by its bold, daring look. The model in the main image defies the current stereotypes, since she is wearing only an oversized blazer, which looks like it was taken from the men’s section. Her hair is really short, and her make-up is minimal yet uncommon, since she is wearing a bright blue eyeliner. This shows the audience that they do not need to feel pressured to fit into any category or norm. They should feel free and comfortable to be themselves. Moreover, each Sylk Magazine issue has a particular topic and title. Mine was inner style and Ana’s was confidence. This is something that isn’t very commonly seen in mainstream magazines. This would make it easier for the audience to see what the issue is about and also, it would help them decide on which they would want to purchase, depending on what they are interested in. The back cover is a very ‘friendly’ one since it shows the audience an easy way of reaching Sylk’s Instagram page. This would help the audience connect more and feel more involved with the magazine, since they would be able to comment and interact with us, the Sylk team, on Instagram.

I believe that the table of contents’ layout and design is very unique and unconventional. Also, the actual contents of the issue are really interesting and they cover topics relating to covid-19, inner style, mental health, lifestyle and fashion. Thus, by reading this issue, the audience would learn new things from different areas.

The article talks about inner style and acts as an introduction towards the rest of the issue. It tells the audience that the Sylk team wishes them a wonderful read, which shows the audience that Sylk cares about them, their opinion and their satisfaction.

The double spreads are filled with colourful images which are placed in a playful way on the pages. They definitely portray a modern, contemporary yet timeless and elegant style.

I believe that in this issue of Sylk Magazine, our target audience (women of all ages) is represented in a very unconventional way. I tried really hard to portray living freely in the moment while feeling good about yourself. The models seem to be having a lot of fun and they seem to be very comfortable with themselves. I believe that this shows the women in our audience that in today’s society, even though people are more judgemental than ever, it is important to find yourself and to show your true inner colours by wearing what reflects your personality. Women shouldn't be afraid to defy stereotypes. They shouldn’t care if they look ‘feminine’ or ‘masculine’. They should be themselves and not care about what others think of them.
