CHOOSING A MAGAZINE GENRE & NAME; CREATING AN INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT.

Updated: Feb 26, 2021

CHOOSING A MAGAZINE GENRE:

Ever since starting AS Media Studies, my colleague Ana Botea and I have had a clear vision of what we wanted to create. Although our blog posts on this topic were written and done individually, the things mentioned were done together, as a group. Our goal is to create a fashion and lifestyle magazine, targeted at women of all ages, in which to portray the lifestyle of a very stylish, glamorous and artistic woman who has interests in fashion, art, design and knows how to appreciate beauty and how to see it in everyone and everything. Both of us feel that this type of woman represents a part of who we are. We believe that there are a lot of women with these same interests and values all around the world. Our goal is for our magazine to be an inspiration to them, to spark their imagination and creativity.

The inspiration behind this are the following magazines:

1. Vogue Magazine ('fashion and lifestyle magazine covering many topics, including fashion, beauty, culture, living and runway')

2. Harper's Bazaar ('your source for fashion trends straight from the runway, makeup and hair inspiration')

3. L'Officiel ('your official source of fashion, art, culture, and lifestyle inspiration.')

Both Vogue and Harper's Bazaar have a more commercial approach and look to their magazines and follow similar magazine conventions. They also have a more classic and timeless house style. L'Officiel is a more artistic and modern magazine, which also has a very beautiful and timeless house style, but a very different content style. Our magazine will be a hybrid between these two types. We want to combine the elegance of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar with the contemporariness and artistic vibe of L'Officiel.

Since we want to create something more modern and never seen before, we're thinking of creating a digital version of our magazine or a website (a concept similar to The Modems), but we will see as we go along.

MOODBOARD:

Our moodboard was done on Pinterest, by creating a board that we both had access to, where we saved all the pictures that we liked and resembled the look we want to achieve in our magazine.

CHOOSING THE NAME OF OUR MAGAZINE:

We had many ideas for the name of our magazine, but after a lot of thought, we decided upon "Sylk Magazine". It is a name which we believe exudes elegance, style and timelessness, while also modernism since we spelled the word "silk" differently. We looked online and did not find any other magazine with the name of Sylk.

CREATING AN INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT:

We've also decided to create an  Instagram page for our magazine, since we noticed that almost all magazines that follow the genres of fashion and lifestyle have one. Also, it helps the promotion of the magazine as well as increases the interaction with the audience. Moreover, having an Instagram account for our magazine, shows that we are thinking of the modern day and age, since social media has become a very big part of people's daily lives.

Since we are only at the beginning of our journey of creating Sylk Magazine, we decided to post on our account some pictures from our moodboard, so that when someone starts following our account they get a sneak peek at what type of content is about to come in the future. In order to make the account seem more professional, we designed a 'temporary' logo for Sylk Magazine, using the mobile app Canva. I call it a temporary logo since we want to change and improve it in the future. But, for the moment, we created something very minimalistic, timeless and elegant which we used as our profile picture as well as for our first post.

Also, our account is a business account since that comes with many benefits such as being able to see insights on our posts and account (information about our followers, analytics, profile visits etc.). In our bio, we also included our personal accounts.
